2011 was definitely the year for Back to the Future fans. The trilogy was re-released in new formats, Delorean announced the release of an all electric vehicle comeback and Nike released the Nike Air Mags aka the Marty McFly’s. 2012 is picking up right where last year left off.
Toy maker Mattel announced at Toy Fair 2012 in New York that it would release a 1:1 a “movie accurate” replica hoverboard that even includes the hole that was left when Marty ripped out the handlebar pole.
While it won’t actually hover, it’s said to “glide” over most surfaces (but not water) while it makes various whooshing noises. Mattel is taking pre-orders from March 1st through March 20th, with delivery scheduled for November or December 2012, but there is a catch: because the hoverboard is such a high-cost item, the device won’t go into production unless a minimum number of orders is placed. Pricing is expected to be revealed later this month. More images below.
