NYC New Artist Watch: BlackJon Photography

Do you know what passion looks like? Tastes like? Feels like?  It is unrequited love woven with obsession; potential exposed by sacrifice.  It is honest and full of scars turned tattoo.  Photographer, BlackJon of BlackJon Photography, infuses a heart-on-your-sleeve approach with a rebellious free spirit to portray his vision—one poured onto a canvas of captured moments.

Under the suggestion of famed photographer, Bill Ray, who he briefly assisted, Blackjon quit his day job as recently as early this week to focus his full attention on his photography.  In less than a week he is already booked for three shoots, is preparing for a showcase to be held on July 26th by RAWartists.org, and is also getting ready for his next shoot and finishing his current piece.  His most recent project was inspired by the genius Charlie Chaplin.  “He emerged in one of my dreams, and in the middle of it I was like, why not,” says Blackjon. Inspired by Chaplin’s ability to convey emotion using gestures and body language, he recreated this approach in his collection titled appropriately, “Charlie,” a shoot that explores his main characters obsession with the icon and the depression that accompanies and suffocates this unanswered attachment.

In three words he described his work as freedom, emotion, and raw.  His greatest inspirations include Bill Ray, Andy Warhol, and Jean Michel Basquiat. He favors black and white stills, using natural light and a Canon Rebel XTI.
