Sophie Bramly ‘1981 & +’ Exhibition: 80s Hip Hop Photography

This Friday, June 17, photographer Sophie Bramly’s highly anticipated exhibition ’1981 + ‘, will finally open to the public. The exhbition focuses on the golden age of Hip Hop, the 1980s.

Unlike other famous names that have documented the birth and evolution of the hip hop scene – like Martha Cooper and Jamel Shabazz – Bramly left Europe specifically to take the streets of New York’s various neighborhoods in the early ’80s.

From Fab 5 Freddy (pictured above) to the Beastie Boys, Kurtis Blow and through Futura, the French photographer has put together some of his best shots in black and white for this show which traces the history from 1981 onwards. The exhibition is being displayed at 12MAIL Gallery exhibition in Paris from June 17 to September 2.

To celebrate the event, the gallery will also present the book of the same name in a limited edition run of 500 copies.
