Valentine’s Day x Technology: BIG♥NYC

This Valentine’s Day, thousands of New Yorkers and tourists alike can share their love at the Crossroads of the World. The Times Square Alliance, which has hosted an annual heart sculpture to celebrate this romantic holiday, created a one-of-a-kind lighted heart display. This year’s 2012 Time Square Valentine heart, a joint collaboration with architecture group BIG, is a 10-foot tall glowing sculpture that interacts with the flow of people, air, and touch.

Appropriately named “BIG♥NYC,”  the sculpture will be on display from February 6 –29 and consists of 400 transparent, LED lit, acrylic tubes that form a cube around a suspended red heart. As people touch the sensor-equipped sculpture, the heart will glow brighter and beat faster while transparent tubes refract lights from Time Square, creating a cluster of lights around this pulsing heart. The Alliance has also taken advantage of social networks, allowing visitors to take photos in front of the sculpture then posting it on Facebook as a charitable donation towards the Hope & Heroes Children’s Cancer Fund. The art display is part of the “Free Love in Times Square” during the month of February which also offers vow renewal ceremonies at the iconic Red Steps and contests and giveaways from the BRIDES Love Truck.
